나의 작품은 콜라주와 연필, 석채가루로 제작된다. 경계 없이 포개진 여러 겹의 배경들 속에 각기 다른 출처와 서로 다른 이야기를 가진 흑백 사진들이 콜라주 기법으로 배치되어 있다. 동시에 일어나는 하나의 사태처럼 보이는 장면을 자세히 들여다보면 명암과 원근법은 조금씩 어긋나 있고, 혼재된 다수의 이야기들의 인과관계는 느슨하다. 내가 바라보는 세상은 서로 다른 시공간, 빛(어둠)을 가진 인간과 이야기가 유기적으로 혼재된 ‘콜라주’이다. 흑백의 콜라주 기법을 선택하고 작품을 구축방식은 이러한 나의 세계관을 바탕으로 한다.

작품의 바탕이 되는 주제와 이야기는 쉽사리 정의하기 어려운 인간과 삶, 모순된 인간의 속성이다. 재현하고 그리는 것보다 흑백의 사진을 잘라 붙이는 콜라주를 작업의 주된 매체로 사용하게 된 이유와 연결이 되는 지점이기도 하다. 사진을 바라보다보면 삶이 박제된 것처럼 보였다. 마치 죽음을 잊은 기괴한 생의 모습이랄까. 삶을 진정 살아있게 하는 것은 항상 죽음이 따르기 때문이다. 하지만 우리는 마치 사진 속 사람들처럼 산다는 것을 잠시 잊고, 때론 죽음도 잊고 살아간다. 삶이 가진 모순된 속성은 인간을 더욱 기괴하면서도 경이롭게 만든다. 사랑과 용기, 희망과 절망, 황홀경과 허상, 과거와 미래의 시간 등, 죽음을 가까이에 둔 인간은 쉽사리 정의하거나 해석하기 어려운 이야기들을 만들어낸다.

작품은 인간의 삶에서 접하는 다양한 모순과 누군가의 이야기들, 나의 기억, 상념 등이 어긋나거나 느슨하게 연결된 ‘이야기의 그물’이다. 감상자의 개입으로 이야기의 지도가 구축될 수 있는 내러티브(narrative)의 틀로써 작품의 이야기는 제목을 단서로 출발하여, 정답이 없는 수수께끼처럼 다양한 차이가 존재하는 감상자의 관점과 선택으로 만들어진다.

현재 콜라주는 일종의 이미지-시나리오가 되어 가변설치, 무대 디자인, 공연 연출 등으로 확장되고 있다. 사랑, 믿음, 희망과 절망, 미래 등 인간의 삶에서 쉽사리 해답을 찾기 어렵고 개인의 다양한 해석의 차이가 존재하는 형이상학적인 주제들을 다루고 있다. 최근 <나는 미래를 보았다>(엘리펀트스페이스, 2018) 라는 제목으로 다원예술 공연의 기획과 연출을 시도했다. 해당 작품은 미래의 가시적 가능성을 질문한 것이며 사운드, 영상, 퍼포먼스 분야의 예술가들과 즉흥성을 기반으로 협업하였다. 공연은 관객의 위치와 동선 및 시선에 따라 미래에 대한 화두를 확장하거나 한정하는 등, 가변적으로 해석할 수 있도록 하였다.

My works are made of collage, pencils and stone powder. Black and white pictures that came from different sources and contain different stories are arranged as a collage in a background overlapped in multiple layers without a border. Many stories exist as a mixture in a scene that looks like an organic situation that occurs simultaneously, and contrast and perspective are somewhat out of focus. Through the creation method of collage that rearranges fragmented images using photographs, I convey stories that the world where we live is a ‘collage’ where entities with various time and spaces and contrasts and stories are mixed in an organic manner.
The content of the works starts from a subject where there exists a clear difference of perspective such as love, death, hope and despair. As there is a contradiction where light and dark exist at the same time in these themes, works with a full of various stories in a canvas in black and white do not reveal a clear description. My works are not the reproduction of my own story. The story of a work is created by the perspective and selection of viewers who have a different point of view using the title of the work. In other words, my works are a frame of narrative that intends for viewers to build their own stories in a story net that is disjointed or loosely connected. The process of creating my works intends to build these frames.
Currently, collages have become a kind of image-scenario and are broadening the scope of its application to changeable installation, stage design, performance production and more. Similarly, I am dealing with subjects that are difficult to find answers and lead to a variety of interpretations by individual viewer. Recently, I participated in planning and directing a multi-art performance with a theme of the future under the title of <I saw the future> (Elephant Space, 2018). The performance created in collaboration with artists of sound, performance and video allows the audience to interpret it variably by expanding or limiting the topic of the future according to their location, movement and gaze.
